Chapter 4 - Fresh air and sunshine
Cain
Arriving at Cainâs house
5:45, Monday morning
Cain was very relieved to pull Felicityâs car into his driveway and shut the engine. She was sitting silent and still in the passenger seat, probably sleeping. It was becoming uncomfortably close to dawn. Heâd thought they would never be done in the emergency room. As it was, they were cutting things rather close. He had less than a half an hour to get inside before the sun would peek over the horizon. More than enough time really, but still, nerve racking after an evening of stressful events.
He looked to Felicity, to tell her that they were home, and was a bit surprised to find that she was awake after all. She sat staring out the window, seemingly deep in thought. She hadnât said much since leaving the gymnasium. Heâd been terribly worried and guilt ridden over the fact that he hadnât gotten to her in time. Once in the hospital by her side, holding her hand as they injected her with antibiotics and sewed stitches through her tender flesh had been almost unbearable. He was unused to witnessing such things. In his world, either you healed quickly on your own, or you were dust. Such drawn out and painful intercessions were unnecessary. To see her go through that after her already trying experiences, feeling that he could have prevented it all, was maddening.
Felicity had told the medical staff an unlikely story of pumpkin carving and playing around foolishly with a kitchen knife. Sheâd said her friends were teasing and chasing her. Sheâd been running with the knife and then fallen, stabbing herself. For a girl of Felicityâs age, it sounded ridiculously irresponsible and unbelievable to Cain, but the nurses barely blinked an eye. It seemed they had dealt with far worse on Halloweenâs eve.
He turned to her now and wondered if the eveningâs events had damaged her more emotionally than the physical damage the knife at her precious throat had done. As the evening had worn on, through the hospital ordeal and then the ride home, she had become more and more withdrawn.
âFelicity?â he gently prodded. âWeâre here.â She barely acknowledged him, but then took off her seatbelt. Heâd thought she would rather go back to the dorm. She had nothing of her own to change into at Cainâs, but she had quietly insisted that she wanted to go to Cainâs house. Heâd driven her with the car to the hospital of course. Even now, he wouldnât let her drive home. Heâd have to return for his motorcycle tomorrow evening, after things had settled.
He left the car and went around to help her from her seat, giving her the car keys to put into her purse. They went up to the house and after he let them in, she passed him and headed straight for the stairs. He worried that she would trip over the welter of skirts her gown sported, but she managed to navigate the stair without event.
